Try Buteyko Breathing for Asthma – It Works!

What is the Buteyko Breathing Method?

[easyazon_image align=”left” cart=”n” height=”500″ identifier=”0062349473″ locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51YCk8I8o5L.jpg” tag=”mcurle08-20″ width=”329″]The Buteyko Breathing method is a way of breathing created by Konstantin Buteyko. It focuses on slowing down the rhythm and rate of breathing. The goal of slowing down the breathing is to increase the carbon dioxide in the body. This provides the body with a better ratio of carbon dioxide to oxygen. Buteyko breathing for asthma symptoms has been reported to be very effective. I’ve experienced relief using this method from my own asthma symptoms.

According to Konstantin Buteyko, a Russian medical doctor, people who suffer from asthma and other related diseases hyperventilate, or over-breathe, and release too much carbon dioxide from the body. Low levels of carbon dioxide in the body is known as hypcapnia, which can be caused by hyperventilation. Hyperventilation is excessively fast and deep breathing. To compensate for hyperventilation and low levels of carbon dixoide, bodies have developed corrective mechanisms to limit the release of carbon dioxide. The tightening of the bronchial muscles and the over production of mucus in the airways is one of these mechanisms. These are very common symptoms of asthma.

Buteyko’s breathing technique has been known to correct the hyperventilation and subsequent decreased level of carbon dioxide. When done correctly, Buteyko practitioners claim, the breathing method can lead to a reduction in the reliance of asthma medicines for the relief of symptoms. This is something that I have noticed in my own practice of Buteyko breathing exercises.

Breathing through the nose, rather than the mouth can help to alleviate the symptoms of asthma. Mouth breathing dries the airways and makes them more sensitive and prone to increased mucus production.

The Buteyko breathing method gained attention in 2009 when Jane Brody, who writes the Personal Health column in the New York Times, described the experience of a friend of hers with severe asthma. Her friend was able to cut back to using less than one puff of her inhaler each day. After just three months of breathing exercises, he was able to discontinue taking the oral medications for asthma altogether.

Low Carbon Dioxide Levels Lead to Problems with Airways

Dr. Sterling in 1968 wrote “The Mechanism of BronchoConstriction Due to Hypocapnia in Man.” This was published by the Clinical Science Journal. In this article, Dr. Sterling suggests that a deficiency of CO2 creates an over-excited state of the cholinergic nerve. This nerve is responsible for the smooth muscles in the bronchi. When this nerve is over-excited, it leads to the constriction of the bronchi and the smaller air packages. This turns into the classic symptoms of asthma, wheezing, coughing and high heart rate. The production of mucus makes it worse.

Buteyko suggested that asthma is caused by alveolar hyperventilation. His first medical article about this was published in 1964. Butyeko observed the central role of breathing too much in the progress and degree of asthma. Buteyko and his medical colleagues also discovered that asthmatics can get fast, drug free relief from asthma symptoms if they practiced shallow and reduced breathing.

Another doctor, Dr. Herxheimer, independently suggested that hypocapnia is the cause of bronchial asthma in 1946.

Development of Allergies and Bronchial Asthma

If we want to cure asthma, we have to know how asthma attacks develop.

Man with wheezing and bronchial asthmaChronic low carbon dioxide values in the bronchi create constriction in the airways. Additionally, chronic hyperventilation makes immune reactions abnormal. The immune system tends to become sensitive when there are low carbon dioxide values. As the immune system responds to intruders from the outside, it weakens the responses to a variety of pathogens, such as viruses and bacteria.

Hyperventilation is a defense reaction which is part of the fight or flight response. Therefore, hyperventilation should mean a state of increased alertness and emergency for the whole organism, including the immune system.

As the immune system is becoming hypersensitive to intruders and normal conditions. Events like breathing cold air or inhaling dust particles now trigger an inflammatory response in asthmatics. This in turn produces excessive mucus, a sense of anxiety or panic and more hyperventilation and a further constriction of the airways.

Prevention with Buteyko Breathing Exercises

Countering hypocapnia can help to prevent asthma attacks by taking the body out of this hypersensitive state that happens through chronic hyperventilation.

Buteyko breathing exercises have demonstrated through controlled tries that after 3-6 months, asthmatics required three to nine times less reliever medication, two times less steroidal drugs, and had a significantly improved quality of life. They reported significantly improved symptoms of asthma.

Breathing retraining requires a constant regulation of breathing due to the negative effects of some modern lifestyle risk factors. Modern lifestyle risk factors include sedentary jobs, consuming high amounts of carbohydrates and poor sleeping habits. Sleeping on your back or snoring can reduce the efficacy of the Buteyko breathing exercises.

Asthmatics are most likely to experience acute attacks or even die during the early morning hours. This is because nighttime breathing can be poor if you are breathing incorrectly at night.

Many Buteyko breathing practitioners encourage mouth taping at night in order to eliminate the negative impacts that can occur from poor breathing while sleeping.

Buteyko breathing practitioners also encourage sufficient physical activity to ensure that the breathing is reset properly. It is recommended that people have at least two hours of physical activity with nasal breathing only each day. This is helpful in maintaining the new pattern of breathing and preventing any further asthma symptoms.

How does it work?[easyazon_infoblock align=”right” cart=”n” identifier=”0954599691″ locale=”US” tag=”mcurle08-20″]

Buteyko breathing techniques are fairly simple to learn and can be easily picked up through online courses or a book. It is encouraged to visit a Butyeko breathing practitioner or clinic if you are suffering from a serious disease.

There are a number of Buteyko breathing clinics around the world. You can go to one of them to learn the techniques.

The Buteyko breathing method basically involves breathing out fully and then pausing your breathing in order to slow it down. The exercises should be done multiple times per day to retrain your body to breathe slower and only through the nose.

The first exercise that you will learn in the Buteyko breathing method is the control pause. This requires you to breathe out and then time how long you can comfortably hold your breathe before you feel the urge to take another breathe. This gives you a general idea of how much oxygen is in your body.

Once you know your control pause, you will want to improve upon that. Ideally, you want to be able to comfortably hold your breathe for about sixty seconds in order to eliminate diseases. Asthmatics typically start with a control pause around twenty seconds. Those who have chronic asthma and allergies are around 30 seconds. People who suffer from seasonal allergies are typically around 30 seconds. Once you can achieve a control pause of 40 seconds, you will have no symptoms of sinusitis, rhinitis, hay fever or asthma.

From my own experience, when my control pause reached 40, I was able to easily fend off colds during the cold and flu season as well as eliminate the majority of my seasonal allergies.

CON #2: It is not a cure. You will need to take the magnesium supplement when you are low in magnesium to alleviate symptoms.

Who is Mg Sport Magnesium Supplements for?

These supplements are designed to correct low magnesium levels. This product is ideal for people who are suffering from symptoms of low magnesium. It works especially well to help alleviate leg cramps that are due to low magnesium levels.

It is ideal for people who are on the ketogenic diet and may be concerned about their electrolyte and mineral levels. Supplementing with magnesium can ensure that you are getting enough magnesium into your diet.

The role of magnesium within the body is primarily regulatory. It enables enzymes to function properly. This allows the body to function properly, which enables a large majority of the body’s chemical reactions.

Enzymes are the foundation of the body’s ability to support life. Most of the necessary chemical reactions in the body are carried out by enzymes. These include the breakdown of sugars in the digestive system. Enzymes allow thee reactions to occur in our body without having the acidic reaction to damage the body’s fragile tissues and organs.

Enzymes require co-factors to function. Magnesium is one of these co-factors which control the rate of reactions within the body. Magnesium is crucial for glucose and fat breakdown. It assists with the production of proteins, enzymes and antioxidants, such as glutiathione. Magnesium plays a role in the creation of DNA and RNA and the regulation of cholesterol production.

Magnesium plays such a crucial role in the body. Deficiencies in magnesium can have far-reaching implications for the body. Therefore, supplementation is a good idea.

I found the pricing of this supplement very affordable. It is $24.48 ($0.24 / Count) for a bottle of 100. You get about a three month’s supply from one bottle if you are only taking one capsule per day. That is less than $1.00 per day to ensure that you have enough magnesium in your body to function well.

My Final Opinion of MgSport Magnesium Supplement

I found that this product really helped me to relieve my cramps in a rather quick manner. This isn’t something that I remember to take each day, but I do notice that when cramps tend to sneak up on me, if I take this product they are relieved quickly. I think my results would be even better if I was more consistent in taking it. I think it would completely prevent them.

Keto Diet Supplements – Which Ones Should You Take?

If you’ve been on the internet at all in the last year, you’ve likely heard about the keto diet supplements. There are a wide variety of opinions about whether you should take supplements and which ones are the most effective. The keto diet is somewhat unique and has its own challenges for the body. Supplementing can help to relieve some of the initial keto flu symptoms that one may experience. Supplementing on the keto diet can help to keep electrolytes in check as well. Another reason to supplement on the keto diet is if you think that you’ll give in to temptation when it comes to social eating situations and slip off the diet.

Supplementation isn’t necessary on the ketogenic diet. However, certain keto supplements will maximize your results, either by accelerating weight and fat loss or boosting your energy levels.

1. Exogenous Ketones

Exogenous ketones, as opposed to the endogenous ones that your body makes, can help increase your energy levels. Taking exogenous ketones helps to proide ketone bodies for you to burn as fuel right away, whether or not you are in ketosis. Some people who aren’t following a keto diet still take exogenous ketones for energy.

There are a number of different brands of exogenous ketones. Many of them are available from network marketing companies. However, you can find others online at Amazon.com.[easyazon_infoblock align=”right” cart=”n” identifier=”B072KFZ9TQ” locale=”US” tag=”mcurle08-20″]

Perfect Keto is a powdered drink mix that provides the body with exogenous ketones.

While the goal of the ketogenic diet is to get your body into ketosis and becoming fat adapted. Taking exogenous ketones is not a replacement for the diet. Many people use exogenous ketones when they want an energy boost or they feel that they may slip up on the diet due to social pressures.

Exogenous ketones can still be helpful for getting back into ketosis after you’ve eaten some extra carbohydrates.

The Main Benefits of Exogenous Ketones:

Focus, Energy, Concentration, Improved Athletic Performance, Increased Weight Loss, Assists with Staying in Ketosis.

2. DHEA

DHEA is dehydropiandrosterone, which is a metabolite that is produced by your brain and adrenal glands. DHEA acts as a growth hormon that can stimulate the production of other hormones. It can also stimulate other hormones that play a role in fat burning and increasing lean muscle mass, such as the thyroid hormone.

DHEA can help to increase the activity of the thermogenic liver enzymes. This means that your liver cells become more efficient at burning fatty acids. Therefore, DHEA can help increase weight and fat loss on the ketogenic diet.

Key Benefits of Taking DHEA on the Ketogenic Diet:

Naturally boosts your metabolism and increases fat and weight loss.

Where to Purchase: DHEA is widely available at health stores. You can also order it conveniently through online retailers, such as Amazon.com.

3. Fish Oil

Fatty fish are great foods to eat on the ketogenic diet and whill help you to stay in ketosis. They have many nutritional benefits including omega-3 essential fatty acids. Omega-3s can be very anti-inflammatory.

The standard American diet is high in Omega 6s. However, too many omega 6s can create an imbalance and become pro-inflammatory. Consuming more Omega 3 essential fatty acids can help to bring that back into balance. It is highly recommended to take a fish oil supplement on the ketogenic diet is a simple and easy way to maintain a healthy omega 3:6 ratio.

The Benefits of Taking a Fish Oil Supplement on the Keto Diet:

Natural anti-inflammatory properties, contributes to your daily fat intake, provides energy.

Where to Buy:

Fish oil is available at any health store, grocery store or even online at Amazon.com.

4. MCT Oil

Medium chain triglycerides, or MCTs, are a fat molecule that is found in coconut oil, palm oli, cheese, butter and yogurt. One of the unique properties of MCTs is that your body can use the energy from MCTs right away.

[easyazon_infoblock align=”right” cart=”n” identifier=”B00XM0Y9SE” locale=”US” tag=”mcurle08-20″]

Due to a shorter chain length than other fatty acids, MCTs take a much faster pathway when they are metabolized. This enables them to be converted to ketones and used for fuel rather than stored as fat.

MCTs are therefore very beneficial on the ketogenic diet for energy and staying in the fat burning state.

The richest source of MCTs is coconut oil. However, you can also take a fractionated MCT oil supplement. This will offer a more concentrated dose of MCTs.

The advantage that MCT oil has over plain coconut oil is that the fatty acids have already been separated from the other nutrients in coconut oil. Theis means your body has to work less when it comes to digestion and results in a quicker conversion of energy.

Taking MCT oil as a daily supplement will count towards your daily intake of fat required to stay in ketosis. MCT oil can be added to shakes, smoothies or your favoriet keto beverage.

The Key Benefits of MCT OIl on the Ketogenic Diet:

Instant energy, helps to meet your macronutrient levels of fat on the ketogenic diet.

Where to Buy MCT Oil:

MCT oil can be purchased online at Amazon.com or at a local grocery store.

Note: Occasionally people experience digestive issues from MCT oil. MCT powder can be easier to digest for some people.

5. Electrolytes: Sodium, Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium

As you are lowering your carbohydrate intake, your body has to adjust to getting electrolytes from other sources. Starchy fruits and vegetables tend to be a quick source of electrolytes. This can be a big concern.

When your electrolyte levels dip, it can cause the keto flu. Symptoms of the keto flu that are linked to low electrolyte levels include dizziness, muscle cramping fatigue, headaches and nausea. These symptoms are commen when you are adapting to the ketogenic diet. A simple way to stay on track is to supplement with electrolytes, especially if you are active.

Calcium and magnesium can have a calming effect on the body. If you are noticing that you have stress and anxiety and are adjusting to the ketogenic diet, this may be the cause of your stress. It might be worthwhile to add some electrolytes to your diet.

Main Benefits of Electrolyte Supplements on the Keto Diet:

Healthy muscle function, eliminating keto flu symptoms

Supplements:

You can get additional electrolytes from sources such as pickle juice and bone broth. If you are interested in taking a supplement, you can add Ulta Replenisher to your daily routine.

6. Vitamin D

Vitamin D is not an essential ketogenic supplement. However, vitamin D helps you in many ways. Vitamin D is also known as the sunshine vitamin. It is produced by the body in response to sun exposure. Vitamin D is also consumed in food and through supplements.[easyazon_infoblock align=”right” cart=”n” identifier=”B00GB85JR4″ locale=”US” tag=”mcurle08-20″]

Vitamin D is essential for maintaining healthy bones and teeth. It also protects against many diseases, such as cancer, type 1 diabetes, and multiple sclerosis.

Key Benefits of Vitamin D:

Health of bones and teeth, supports the immune system, nervous system and brain, regulates insulin levels, influences gene expression, supports lung and cardiovascular health.

Conclusion

While I’m not a big fan of supplementation, these are some great keto diet supplements that will make your life a lot easier. You don’t have to use any of these supplements to be successful on the ketogenic diet. However, they can help you achieve your goals faster and give you extra energy.

  1. The Free Radical Biology and Medicine Journal published a study by G.W. Booz from the University of Mississippi Medical Center. It demonstrated that cannabidiol can be useful in reducing the impact of inflammation on oxidative stress, decreasing the risk of organ damage and dysfunction. Oxidative stress contributes to many diseases including diabetes type 1, rheumatoid arthritis, atherosclerosis, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, Alzheimer’s and depression.
  2. Scientists from the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD showed that cannabinoids can suppress inflammatory and neuropathic pain without causing analgesic tolerance. They discovered that cannabinoids suppress the inflammatory response and reduce disease symptoms by inducing apoptosis in activated immune cells. Cannabinoids suppress cytokines and chemokines at inflammatory sites and upregulating FoxP3 regulatory T cells.

How to Start the Ketogenic Diet for Weight Loss

You’ve heard all the buzz about the ketogenic diet and even seen some great before and after pictures. Now, you want to know how to start the ketogenic diet for weight loss. It can sound very confusing at first with all the talk of macros and ketones, the net carbs versus the total carbs. It can even sound a bit unappealing when you hear that it is about 75% fats! For years that alone scared me off! Don’t worry. This diet can be simplified to fit even the busiest lifestyle!

Doing this diet for weight loss is a little bit different than doing this diet for epilepsy. You can be a little bit more flexible with your macronutrients. You don’t have to worry about being a gram off on your carbohydrates when you are doing this for weight loss.

Find Your Starting Point

This will probably be the only time that I tell someone to step on the scale. However, if you are getting started with a weight loss goal, you need to have a solid starting point and a firm goal in mind. Otherwise, you may end up like millions of other dieting casualties.

  1. Weigh Yourself – Know your weight. It may not change, but it is good to know.
  2. Measure yourself – Sometimes when we lose weight and add muscle, the weight doesn’t change, but the inches do!
  3. Take pictures – It is great to have before and after photos as evidence that something is working for you. Don’t forget to take some starting point pictures. Plan on taking some as each month goes by.
  4. Assess what you are currently eating. Examine the packages of food that you have and see what the carbohydrate count is for the foods that are in your refrigerator. If they are over 20 grams per serving, you’ll have to eliminate them from your diet. They are likely leading to insulin resistance and weight gain.

Learn the Foods that You Can Eat

The main thing to keep in mind on a ketogenic diet is that you want to cut your carbohydrates to less than 20 grams of carbohydrates per day. If you want to see faster results, you will focus on total carbohydrates. For somewhat more relaxed results, use the total carbohydrate count.

When I was getting started counting carbohydrates, I was completely overwhelmed. I had some ideas of low carbohydrate foods and was checking the nutrition labels. I was frustrated by trying to calculate the macros every day. Thankfully, I had a conversation with my sister, who had been diagnosed at age 3 with type I Diabetes. She said, after a while, you know which foods you can freely eat. Focus on those. She admitted to me that she didn’t always count carbs when eating lettuce, celery or zero carbohydrate foods like meats and cheeses.

Here are some foods that you should freely eat on the ketogenic diet:

  • Meats – shrimp, bacon, hamburger, beef, chicken, salmon
  • Eggs – deviled eggs, egg salad, scrambled eggs
  • Cheese – string cheese, cheddar cheese, Parmesan, mozzarella
  • Mayonnaise – great for chicken salads and egg salads
  • Celery – fun with cream cheese
  • cucumber – sliced and put into salads
  • pickles – dill pickle relish, pickles as a side dish
  • Lettuce – great for salads and wraps

Just within this list, you could create a whole week’s worth of meals and not even worry about carbohydrates! However, if you are like me, after a while, you’ll be craving variety. That is when you’ll want to check out the free keto cookbook for some fun recipes.

Start Eating Keto Foods

Wait, what about calculating my macros? Shouldn’t I know exactly the amount that I’m going to eat? No. Get started incorporating the lower carbohydrate foods into your diet first. Lots of people will tell you to figure out the macros and then calculate out each one for every meal. However, I want you to make this a lifestyle. I want to simplify the ketogenic diet for you. Getting used to these nutrient dense, low carbohydrate foods is an important step. It is far more important than measuring out each gram of carbohydrate.

As you incorporate more and more keto meals into your lifestyle, you’ll discover that you are pretty satiated and you won’t feel that you need to eat nearly as often as you once thought you needed to eat. Spend a week or two just getting used to the keto meals and foods and purging your refrigerator of the high carbohydrate foods that you shouldn’t be eating. Removing the temptation of high carbohydrate foods will ultimately lead to success.

Some people like to start by making one meal per day ketogenic. They figure out the breakfasts that they will eat on the ketogenic diet. Once they have mastered a keto breakfast, they start swapping out the high carbohydrate foods that are in their lunch for something more keto friendly. For me, I love chicken salads, egg salads and tuna salad for lunch. It is easy to pack and take with me to work.

Figure Out the Macros

Now that you know what foods are low carbohydrate and you’ve gotten used to eating lower carbohydrate at a few meals, you should take a look at the macronutrient ratios that you should be hitting. For weight loss, the most important macro is going to be 20 grams of carbohydrates. You’ll want to make sure that you stay below that number.

The next macronutrient that you want to consider is your protein intake. The ketogenic diet is a moderate protein diet. Twenty percent of your diet should be .

Finally, you should be consuming about 70% fats. This can come from fatty cuts of meat like bacon, butter, avocados or oils and salad dressings.[easyazon_infoblock align=”right” cart=”n” identifier=”B013XG7GZO” locale=”US” tag=”mcurle08-20″]

The keto buddy is a great app to help you calculate your macros. Here’s a link to it – https://ketodietapp.com/Blog/page/KetoDiet-Buddy

Track Your Foods

Once you have a good idea of the foods that you should be eating and are comfortable incorporating them into your lifestyle, you should track your food consumption. I will admit, I’ve only done this for a month or two. Once I had a good routine of eating low carb/high fat foods, and saw some improvements in my health, I let this step drop off a bit.

It is important to keep in mind that this is a healthy way of eating, not simply a quick fix to get to your weight loss goal. Your goal should be to create a healthy lifestyle. Tracking your foods won’t be necessary after you’ve gotten used to the diet. It will become second nature to eat low carbohydrate foods.

I had a friend that was doing it and I started to incorporate the concepts into my diet. I was moderately successful with it on my own. However, when I discovered that there are whole facebook groups dedicated to learning about the ketogenic diet and getting healthier with it, I joined a few of them. I noticed that my committment to my health skyrocketed as I discovered other people who I could help and who could help me when I got down about the diet or just wanted to cheat on it.

You may discover that you don’t participate much in the support group, but you may find that you make loads of friends from it. Ketogenic support groups also share recipe and snack ideas in case you find that you need variety in your life.

Support groups will share awesome resources with you, such as books, ketone testing devices, and other concepts such as intermittent fasting. These can help to support your progress and success.

In your ketogenic journey, your weight loss progress may stall. This is a great time to turn to your support group and ask for advice. Often they can tell you to adjust your macronutrients, or figure out if there is a food that may be slowing down your progress. (This is quite often dairy!)

The Good & the Bad

The Good:

PRO #1: They taste pretty good. They didn’t fool me into thinking that I was eating some decadent chocolate or peanut butter, but after I got used to the texture, I started to enjoy the flavors. I could have easily eaten one a day if I had an unlimited supply. I started to enjoy them that much!
PRO #2: They are great for people who want to stay low carbohydrate, but have an on the go lifestyle. You can easily pack them for hikes or travel.
PRO #3: A great variety of delicious flavors. You aren’t stuck with just one or two weird chocolate protein bars. They have everything from peanut butter to white chocolate raspberry, cinnamon and coconut cashew.

PRO #4: I found Quest bars to be very filling due to the amount of protein in them.

The Bad:

CON #1: Somewhat expensive for a snack.
CON #2: Over the years Quest has tweaked the flavors. Many people complained about the recipe adjustment in 2015, but others have said that the latest recipe is great. It is a matter of personal preference.

CON #3: They don’t have a fat ratio that fits the ketogenic diet, so you will have to get your fats from other sources. However, it is difficult to make fat shelf stable. If you are trying to stay ketogenic, you’ll have to add some extra fats to our meals.

Who are Quest Bars for?

These are great for people who are counting carbohydrates. They only have between 4-7 net carbohydrates per bar. The bars are filling enough that you can use them as a meal replacement.

Quest bars are perfect for a Diabetic who is on the go and needs some fuel. With less that 5 net carbs per bar, this should keep a diabetic’s blood sugar levels stable.  It is great for ketogenic dieters who are watching their carbohydrate intake. Additionally, people who are looking to lose weight and stick to a low carbohydrate diet will enjoy snacking on Quest Bars.

Quest Bars Price

The Quest bars are about $.91 per ounce. They come in a box of 12 for $23.06. I think the price of these bars is a little on the high side. However, when compared to Atkins protein bars, they are a few cents per ounce less than the Atkins’ brand.

They are convenient and you do end up paying for convenience. The pricing in my opinion is quite fair for these bars.

My Final Opinion of Quest Bars

I have enjoyed eating Quest bars when I was trying to stick with my low carb dieting. I am not a big fan of processed foods, but I do enjoy the convenience of having them for a quick snack or meal when I am traveling or when I am pressed for time.

Quest bars are not a big part of my diet, but they are an indulgence when I am taking trips. They are great for packing to take on a long hike. I do appreciate the convenience of having a protein bar from time to time.

How the Keto Diet and Intermittent Fasting Go Hand in Hand

The latest diet craze seems to be the keto diet and if you’ve frequented the keto diet groups, you may have noticed a buzz about intermittent fasting. People are hailing it as the greatest thing ever. Why is intermittent fasting so wonderful? What’s up with that?

What is Intermittent Fasting?

Intermittent fasting is a pattern of eating where you take a break from foods for a period of time. You alternate between eating and fasting. Intermittent fasting does not prescribe what types of foods that you should eat, but it does let you know when to eat.

There are many different ways to do intermittent fasting. Some people rely fast every day for a sixteen hour period. They have an eight hour window where they will consume all of their calories and then give their body a break from digestion. Other people will take a full 24 hours of fasting a week. The majority of people already fast every night while they sleep. Intermittent fasting can be as simple as extending that fast by skipping a meal, either breakfast or dinner. When you do that, you are techinically fasting for sixteen hours. This is the most popular type of intermittent fasting. It is often referred to as the 16/8 method.

Initially, it may sound challenging, but intermittent fasting can be fairly easy to do. People often report feeling better and having more energy during a fast. Hunger does not become a big issue. It can be challenging initially when your body is getting used to not eating for extended periods.

During a fast, you should refrain from foods. You can consume water. Some people will still include low-calorie foods and beverages, such as tea and coffee during the fasting period.

<<Check out my review of Brad Pilon’s Eat Stop Eat intermittent fasting program.>>

What is the Keto Diet?

The Keto diet, also known as the ketogenic diet, is a low carbohydrate and high fat diet. It was initially prescribed for people who have epilepsy to control their seizures. However, the benefits of the ketogenic diet are far reaching. Many people are using the keto diet for weight loss and having wonderful results.

By restricting carbohydrates, the body starts to burn fats and create ketones. Ketosis is a natural state of the body that helps it survive when food intake is low. During ketosis, ketones are produced from the breakdown of fats in the liver.

The goal of a properly maintained keto diet is to get your body to the metabolic state known as ketosis. We do this through the starvation of carbohydrates, but not calories.

Our bodies are designed to adapt to whatever you put into them. As you overload your body with fats and take away carbohydrates, it begins to burn ketones as the primary energy source. Optimal ketone levels offer many health, weight loss, physical and mental performance benefits.

Satiation and the Ketogenic Diet

As the body goes into ketosis, it becomes what is known as “fat adapted.” This means that the body’s running on fats. When the body is running on carbohydrates, it tends to burn through them quickly, leaving you hungry after a few minutes or hours. However, once your body has reached the metabolic state of ketosis, it will rely on fats as a fuel source.

When your body is running on fats as a fuel source, it doesn’t tend to be as hungry. You feel satiated much longer than when your body is running on carbohydrates for fuel. This is because carbohydrates tend to be a quick source of energy, while fats are a slower burning type of energy.

While it isn’t clearly understood why the ketogenic diet is satiating when it comes to hunger, it is one of the benefits of the ketogenic diet. According to a study published in the American Journal of Nutrition in 2008, it was shown that low-carbohydrate ketogenic diets reduce hunger and lower food intake significantly more than do high-protein, medium-carbohydrate nonketogenic diets. The study compared the impact of a ketogenic diet to a moderate carbohydrate diet on seventeen obese men over a four week period of time. Energy intakes were greater with low carbohydrate and weight loss was significantly greater with the low carbohydrate ketogenic diet.

Health Benefits of Intermittent Fasting

There are many body changes that occur when we don’t eat for awhile. Hormones, genes and important cellular repair processes are triggered. When fasted, we can get significant reductions in insulin levels and blood sugars, as well as an increase in human growth hormones.

Many people use intermittent fasting because it aids in weight loss. It is a very simple and effective way to restrict calories and burn fat.

Intermittent fasting also has metabolic helath benefits. It can improve the risk factors and health markers.

Some studies have shown that intermittent fasting can help you live longer.

Intermittent fasting helps to protect against diseases as well. You can ward off heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease with intermittent fasting.

Health Benefits of the Ketogenic Diet

The ketogenic diet has show to decrease inflammation, which helps a whole host of health related problems including acne, arthritis, eczema, psoriasis, IBS and pain. It is linked to the BHB-mediated inhibition of the NLRP3 inflammasome.

The key player in inflammatory diseases is suppressed by BHB, which is one of the main ketones that the ketogenic diet produces.

The ketogenic diet tends to increase energy levels and sleep through both a stabilization of insulin levels and a readily available source of energy for the brain and body. While it is somewhat of a mystery why the ketogenic diet improves slee, studies have show that it decreases REM and increases slow-wave sleep patterns. It is likely related the complex biochemical shifts involving the brain’s use of ketones for energy combined with other body tissues directly burning fat.

The ketogenic diet also helps to keep uric acid levels in check, which helps kidney function and preventing gout.

Conclusion

As you can see, there are great benefits to both the ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting. By combining the two, you can easily achieve optimal health.

The biggest problem that many people have with intermittent fasting is that they fear they will be hungry. However, when eating a keto diet, you become very satiated with the foods that you eat. You tend to only eat when you truly are hungry and need food on a ketogenic diet. That makes pairing a ketogenic diet with intermittent fasting simpe and easy. You get additional health benefits.

Keep Track of Your Progress with SmackFat Ketone Test Strips For Urine Ketone Testing

When you embark on the ketogenic diet, it is nice to know if you are doing things correctly and your body is becoming a fat burning machine. However, some people love numbers and data and want to ensure that they are on their way to producing the ketones that will sustain their body instead of glucose. Enter in the ketone test strips!

At the beginning of the ketogenic diet, ketone test strips can give you an idea of whether your body is producing ketones.[easyazon_image align=”right” cart=”n” height=”500″ identifier=”B00SODYZQK” locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51Un7-LoXmL.jpg” tag=”mcurle08-20″ width=”500″] As you become more and more fat adapted, you won’t be peeing out the ketones, so the strips won’t be as useful to you. Your body will actually use up the ketones as energy, so you won’t be registering as many ketones once you are fat adapted.

Testing your ketones with urine ketone test strips is painless and easy. You can get a result within a minute and know whether your body is producing ketones!

Foods to Avoid on a Ketogenic Diet and Why!

Yes, you are supposed to keep your carbohydrate count below 20 grams on a ketogenic diet. Your fat intake should be in the seventy percent range and your protein intake should be in the twenty-five percent range. However, there are some foods to avoid on the ketogenic diet for specific reasons beyond their carbohydrate count. Understanding why you should avoid some foods will help to strengthen your resolve and stick with your diet.

Potatoes

What? Potatoes are a vegetable! If I just have a tiny bit of potatoes and fit it into my macros, can I have potatoes. Unfortunately, the carbohydrate count in potatoes makes it very difficult for that to happen, but there is another great reason to avoid potatoes. They are a nightshade plant.

Nightshades are plants that have specific compounds that are detrimental and inflammatory. Many people with autoimmune diseases have their conditions exacerbated by eating nightshades.

There are a group of chemical compounds in nightshades known as alkaloids. These include solanine, which is found in potatoes.

When the plant is alive, these compounds work together as its inherent pesticide, defending itself from plants that would otherwise kill it. They are designed to be toxic. In the poisonous members of the nightshade family, these chemicals are so concentrated that the also have deadly effects on humans.

However, since humans are much larger than bugs and molds, and since we don’t eat the most alkaloid rich parts of the potato plant, most of us don’t notice a huge effect from consuming these small amount of alkaloids.

A healthy gut can deal with these chemicals fine, however most people now have a damaged digestive system. If you suffer from an autoimmune disease, you likely will deal with an immune response when consuming potatoes.

Alkaloids themselves can also create gut irritation. Their job in the plant is to kill things. When they start killing things in your intestine, it usually happens to the cells that line the intestinal tract. This irritation of the gut can contribute to a phenomenon known as “leaky gut” syndrome. This will trigger an autoimmune reaction.

Another great reason to avoid plants in the nightshade category is because research has shown that there is a possible link between chronic inflammation in the body and a variety of symptoms and illnesses. Up to 90% of individuals who suffer from chronic join pain are sensitive to nightshades.

Legumes – Beans

Beans, which are part of the legume family, contain phytic acid in addition to an elevated carbohydrate load. Phytic acid can bind to nutrients in the foods you eat, which prevents you from absorbing their nutrients. It won’t steal nutrients that are already in your body, but it does reduce the nutrient density that is listed on the nutrition facts panel.

Legumes are also known as FODMAPS, which means that they contain the carbohydrate galacto-oligosaccharides, which can create unpleasant digestive issues for some people, especially those who are already suffering from irritable bowel syndrome or similar digestive disorders. While not everyone is sensitive to FODMAPS foods, it is definitely a concern for anyone who already has digestive issues.

Beans also have a high lectin content. Lectins are found in almost all foods, but not all lectins are problematic. Some people react poorly to lectins. Potentially toxic lectins can be found in legumes.

Grains – Rice, Corn, and Wheat

Grains contain phytates, gluten and lectins. These all can have negative impacts on your health.

The phytates in grains will bind to dietary minerals and reduce the amount that you absorb. Therefore, if you are consuming grains, you want to ensure that your diet is rich in minerals. To help break down phytates, you can soak food in yogurt, buttermilk, or water combined with lemon juice or vinegar.

In wheat, gluten is one of the main problems for many people. Gluten is the protein which allows for bread to rise by forming gas cells that hold off carbon dioxide as it ferments. Due to modern farming and technology, the gluten in wheat products has increased by about 80%. Gluten is worse than lectin and phytic acid. Gluten is found in barley, rye, and wheat. Gluten destroys the microvilli in the small intestine, which results in leaky gut syndrome. This will trigger autoimmune diseases and allergies.

Roughly 2% of Americans have Celiac disease. Twenty-nine percent of people test positive for the anit-gliadin IgA in their blood, but are asymptomatic. There is a larger amount of the population which suffers from gluten intolerance with symptoms such as headaches, joint pain, skin problems, seizure disorders and mental disorders.

Additionally, gluten can trigger the over-abundance of zonulin. This is a protein which is responsible for the permeability of tight junctions between the cells of the wall of the digestive tract. Too much zonulin production disrupts intestinal barrier function.

The lectins from grains cause leptin resistance. This means that your hunger signal is suppressed and that you’ll be hungry even when your body has had more than enough calories. Lectins are resistant to heat and digestive enzymes. They can bind to almost any cell types and cause damage to tissues and organs.

The lectins in grains cause agglutination. Agglutination stimulates the synthesis of chemical messengers that are responsible for inflammation in response to injury or invasion. It also stimulates pro-inflammatory cytokines and causes gut permeability, which enables bacteria and large particles to enter the bloodstream. Agglutination also inhibits the nerve growth factor, which keeps neurons alive and thriving, and sticks to the protective covering of the nerves, or the myelin sheath. Agglutination can also disrupt the endocrine function and interfere with genetic expression.

Refined Sweeteners – Sugar, Corn Syrup

Sugar and Corn Syrup have extremely high levels of carbohydrates, so you wouldn’t reasonably be able to fit them into your daily ketogenic diet. However, there are some other great reasons to avoid sugar and corn syrup like the plague.

First and foremost, sugar enters the bloodstream from the digestive tract. Then it is broken down into glucose and fructose. Glucose is found in every living cell that is on our planet. If we don’t consume glucose, our bodies end up producing it. Fructose, on the other hand is not produced by our body. There is no physiological need for fructose.

The problem with fructose is that it can only be metabolized in the liver in small amounts. This is not a problem if we are consuming tiny amounts, such as in berries. When that happens, the fructose will be turned into glycogen and stored in the liver until it is needed by the body.

If the liver hits its glycogen limit, eating a lot of fructose will overload it and force it to turn the fructose into fat. Repeatedly consuming large amounts of sugar can create a fatty liver and more serious problems.

Sugar also causes a release of dopamine in the reward center of the brain. The dopamine release from sugar and corn syrup is much higher than we were ever exposed to in nature. It is this dopamine release that creates an addition to sugar.

Growing research supports the conclusion that sugar, not fat, is the leading driver of heart disease through the harmful effects of fructose on the metabolism.

Large amounts of fructose raise triglycerides, small dense LDL and oxidized LDL. This is very bad. It also raises blood glucose and insulin levels and increases the abdominal obesity in as few as ten weeks. These are all factors for heart disease.

Processed Foods – Anything that comes in a Box

When it comes to staying on a low carbohydrate, or ketogenic diet, you’ll want to avoid anything that is processed and comes in a box. The reason for this is that the ingredients for processed foods are typically grains, sugars and beans. Processed foods are generally nutrient poor foods that are high in preservatives. Avoiding processed foods when on a ketogenic diet will simplify the diet for you. You won’t have to read and look up ingredients that are unfamiliar to you. You can be confident that the meat and veggies that you have selected for your meal don’t contain hidden ingredients if they haven’t been processed and packaged.

The Good & the Bad

The Good:

PRO #1: It is comfortable to sit in this type of chair. It almost feels just like sitting in a regular office chair, with the exception of being able to move your hips and legs a bit more.
PRO #2: You can lean back on the back rest when you get fatigued.
PRO #3: This chair is capable of sliding around just like a regular office chair. This is helpful if you are used to sliding your chair under your desk and making slight movements in an office chair.

PRO#4: This ball enables you to turn your sitting desk job into a core workout. Micro movements will challenge your core.

PRO #5: You can take the ball off the chair and use it for your yoga exercises. You can do push ups with it.

PRO #6: It prevents you from slouching and improves your posture.

The Bad:

CON #1: There were some unsatisfied customers. Not everyone was enamored by this chair.
CON #2: You may find the first few days of sitting on a stability ball challenging and a little uncomfortable. In time, you will probably adjust.

CON #3: While I didn’t experience any difficulty with the metal bar, there are a few reviewers who found that it came off easily.

Who is Gaiam Stability Ball Chair For?

This chair is designed for people who want to improve their core strength. It is especially helpful for people who spend a lot of time sitting at desks. It enables more flexibility and movement for when you are sitting at your desk. You can swivel your hips around and stretch from side to side.

This desk challenges your core muscles by providing a slight bit of instability on the ball. The nice thing about the stability ball combined with the chair is that when you are tired, you can lean back onto the backrest as you may do in a regular chair.

Gaiam Stability Ball Chair  Tools & Training

You don’t actually need a lot of training to sit in these chairs. However, if you want to incorporate some core strengthening movements into your day, you could check out some videos on the stability ball chair.

Gaiam Stability Ball Chair Support

The support offered with Gaiam Stability balls is through email and phone. You can contact support at customerservice@gaiam.com or call them at 1-877-989-6321 if you have any questions regarding your Gaiam Stability Ball Chair.

Gaiam Stability Ball Chair Price

The stability ball is on sale at Amazon for $69.98. This is comparably priced to other stability ball chairs on the market, which can range from $62.98 to $99.99.

My Final Opinion of Gaiam Stability Ball Chairs

I happen to love these chairs for the office. I love them for adults. However, our middle school is testing them out in classrooms with ADHD students and they are not ideal for learning in a classroom. Here’s the problem with allowing pre-teens to use these chairs. They like to roll across the classroom. This can become loud and a distraction. They bounce a lot of them. When you have multiple kids bouncing on stability balls while trying to teach a concept, you can start to feel slightly seasick! I would love to discover a way to implement them in the classroom because I feel like they are a great way to improve your core and add some movement to these kid’s incredibly sedentary lives.

I love the stability ball as a chair. I have noticed that it helps to improve my core strength and my posture. I like that my hips have a bit more movement capability while I am working at my desk and using a stability ball chair. I do prefer the chair over a plain stability ball. I find that when I am working, I do want the option of leaning back on the backrest. There is a little bit more stability in the chair versus a stability ball.

Overall, I highly recommend these chairs!
