The Ketogenic Diet and Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic syndrome is a number of risk factors that increase your chances of developing heart disease, diabetes and stroke. According to dictionary.com, metabolic syndrome is defined as a cluster of biochemical and physiological abnormalities which are associated with cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.

The symptoms of metabolic syndrome include a large waist, high blood pressure, high triglyceride levels, low HDL levels as well as elevated blood sugar levels. While these are a cluster of symptoms and not a disease they are classed together. Their association with a variety of different diseases suggests that there is a common cause.

In addressing the common cause, treatments that work for one symptom and not the others should be considered inferior. The ketogenic diet improves symptoms of Metabolic Syndrome. Additionally, for each of the diseases associated with Metabolic Syndrome, the studies have shown favorable evidence that it is helpful. This supports the hypothesis that the ketogenic diet addresses the common cause.

ketogenic diet and metabolic syndrome

Ketogenic Diet Treats Insulin Resistance

The ketogenic diet is diet very low in carbohydrates and high in fat. This is very effective at maintaining stable blood sugars. Carbohydrates have a tendency spike blood sugars and increase the complications that are associated with Diabetes.

As the body begins to burn the fats, it breaks them down into ketones. Because the body does not require glucose, it does not need to produce as much insulin.

Carbohydrate restriction tends to have a more favorable impact on metabolic syndrome compared to a low fat diet. The ketogenic diet can be effective in reducing anti diabetic medication dosage.

In a 2013 review published by the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, it was determined that a ketogenic will lead to significant improvements in blood sugar control, A1c levels, and can also lead to a discontinuation of insulin requirements.

The Ketogenic Diet to Address Obesity

Researchers have been studying whether a high fat diet can address the obesity that is associated with metabolic syndrome. In an article published in 2014 in the International Journal for Environmental Research and Public Health, it was determined that a ketogenic diet may be helpful to reduce obesity. A low carbohydrate ketogenic diet helps control hunger and improves fat oxidative metabolism. This will in turn reduce body weight.

New ketogenic diet recipes that mimic carbohydrate rich foods increase compliance to the diet. Many people want to continue eating some of their favorite flavors, but don’t want to add the carbohydrates to their diet.

While many were concerned about the long term effects of a ketogenic diet, researchers examined the impact of a ketogenic diet on obese patients over 24 weeks. The study was published in Experimental and Clinical Cardiology in 2004.

The patients saw weight and body mass index decrease significantly. The level of total cholesterol decreased as well. HDL levels in the patients increased significantly, while LDL levels decreased after the treatment. The triglycerides showed a significant decrease during the 24 weeks of treatment. Blood glucose levels also significantly decreased.

It was determined that the ketogenic diet is a safe treatment for obese patients. There were no negative side effects that were noticed.

Ketogenic Diet and High Blood Pressure

There is not a lot of research on the ketogenic diet and blood pressure. However, Children’s Hospital and Research Center in Oakland published a comparison of the ketogenic diet and the DASH’s impact on blood pressure. They discovered that there was no difference in the reduction of blood pressure between the diets. The DASH diet and the ketogenic diet both decreased hypertension compared to the control.

The higher fat DASH diet produced lower triglyceride and very low density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. This is due to eliminating the calories from juices and other natural sugars which are permitted on the DASH diet.

Ketogenic Diet and Cholesterol Levels

Researchers have investigated the impacts of very low carbohydrate diets on the important metrics of cardiovascular health, including HDL cholesterol levels.

The diet was limited to less than 50 grams of carbohdyrates. This is lower than is recommended to diabetics. Researchers included 13 randomized controlled studies with 1,415 subjects. The studies lasted for a full year. The low carbohydrate diets were compared to low fat diets.

Twelve studies examined the impact of HDL cholesterol. The individuals who were assigned to the very low carbohydrate diet achieved an increase in HDL of 0.12 mmol/L. This increase was double what the low fat dieters experienced at 0.06 mmol/L. The authors concluded that carbohydrate restricted diets improve the levels of HDL in the body.

Conclusion

The ketogenic diet is extremely effective in addressing the wide variety of conditions that are associated with Metabolic Syndrome. While these symptoms may seem unrelated, the ketogenic diet has been successful at treating them. The conditions seem to be linked through insulin resistance. The ketogenic diet is successful at treating insulin resistance as it reduces the glucose that is introduced to the body. This allows the body to correct the underlying cause.

The ketogenic diet could also be used to prevent metabolic syndrome in individuals who have a family history of metabolic syndrome. The ketogenic diet is becoming easier and easier to follow as more and more people are adopting it as a way of life.

Breathing and Health: How the Buteyko Breathing Method Works

The Buteyko breathing method was a concept of measuring your health through your rate of breathing. Konstatin Buteyko recognized that when his patients were about to die, they often had shallow and rapid breathing. They tended to take big breaths.

From this observation, Buteyko created a theory and a protocol for breathing that has helped many regain their health. It is currently known as the Buteyko breathing method. He focuses on eliminating the causes of hyperventilation and training your body to slow down its breathing.

[easyazon_image align=”right” cart=”n” height=”500″ identifier=”0062349473″ locale=”US” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51YCk8I8o5L.jpg” tag=”mcurle08-20″ width=”329″]

Modern Life Creates Hyperventilation

Our modern lifestyle has us hyperventilating. Most people think of hyperventilation as something that occurs with rapid breathing. However, when we chronically breathe faster than we should on a day to day basis, we start to think of that as the norm. We begin to accept a more diseased state as normal.

Our modern foods have drastically changed. Many people consume convenience foods and processed foods on a daily basis. These foods are quite inflammatory to our body and require more oxygen to eliminate than natural foods. Therefore, they can trigger hyperventilation.

Our modern workday often consists of sitting at a desk and staring at a computer screen rather than working outside in the sunshine for hours on end. Often, slouching at your desk and looking at your computer screen can create a slouched posture. This posture can compress the diaphragm. This leads to upper chest breathing instead of proper breathing with the diaphragm.

Workouts are not focused on proper breathing either. Schools often teach students to breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth rather than to only breathe through the nose. Some physical education instructors don’t even address breathing as they teach running and sports to their students. The most effective exercise comes when you implement 100% nasal breathing.

Benefits of Nasal Breathing

Our bodies were designed to breathe through the nose. However, many factors may make one deviate from breathing with their nose.

Breathing through the nose restricts the amount of air that gets taken into the body. This insures the proper amount of gas exchange in the lungs. Oxygen is our main source of life. Exhalation is the way that we expel toxins from the body. Therefore, poor breathing can lead to health problems which include insomnia and high blood pressure.

Cancer may be due to poor breathing as well. Otto Warburg won a Nobel Prize in 1931 for determining that only oxygen-starved cells become cancerous. This should motivate everyone to breathe properly.

When we become stressed out and overstimulated due to our daily lives, it can trigger a fight or flight reaction. We may subconsciously start poor breathing. Nasal breathing helps to take fuller, deeper breaths. This will stimulate the lower lung to distribute greater amounts of oxygen through the body.

Breathing that reaches the lower lunch also calms the body and mind. The lower lung has many parasympathetic nerve receptors which can calm the body. The upper lungs will be stimulated with chest and mouth breathing. This triggers the sympathetic nerve receptors that stimulate the fight or flight reaction.

Breathing deep into the lower lobes of your lungs will massage and exercise the diaphragm. As the diaphragm contracts and relaxes, it massages the stomach. This enables better digestion.

Nasal breathing activates the rib cage to act as a pump for lymph fluid. It pulls the lymph fluid from the lower parts of the body into the chest cavity and the heart. This improves lymphatic flow.

Nasal breathing increases the production of nitric oxide. This is an important signaling molecule in the body. Nitric oxide plays a role in expanding blood vessels, increasing blood flow and protecting organs from damage.

Breathing only through the nose has shown to lower heart rate and breath rate compared to mouth breathing exercise.

Nasal breathing can be good for your brain as well. It has shown an increase in alpha brain wave activity compared to mouth breathing exercise. The alpha brain waves are created during relaxation or meditative states. Mouth breathing produces a large amount of beta brain waves associated with a stress response.

Nasal breathing has demonstrated an increase in brain wave coherence. This is associated with calm and organized brain function.

How To Get Started with the Buteyko Method

The best way to get started with the Buteyko breathing method is to focus in on breathing only through your nose. That simple switch will help to alleviate some of your health concerns. As you focus in on slowing down your breathing and only breathing through your nose, you can start to master the Buteyko breathing exercises.

One of the simplest Buteyko breathing exercises is known as Steps. It is an exercise where you exhale through your nose. Then you plug your nose as you walk and count the number of steps that you take. Your goal should be to reach 100 steps in one breath. However, you can’t hold your breath so long that you are gasping for air. You take a breath when you start to feel air hunger.

There are quite a few other YouTube videos that can instruct you on some Buteyko breathing exercises.

Buteyko Resources

There are many resources to learn the Buteyko Breathing Method. Patrick McKeown has some books on Amazon that you can pick up and learn most of the breathing exercises. He has a breathing clinic.[easyazon_infoblock align=”right” cart=”n” identifier=”0954599691″ locale=”US” tag=”mcurle08-20″]

There are Buteyko practitioners that will teach you the method of breathing. The Buteyko clinic has many practitioners that will teach you the method. Their instructors are located throughout the United States and Internationally.

Conclusion

Getting your breathing to be correct can greatly improve your life. I used the Buteyko breathing method to eliminate my seizure medication. It also helped me to reduce the seasonal allergies and cat allergies that often bothered me. Since I learned the technique, I haven’t had a cold or gotten sick at all even when the surrounding people were falling ill.

The Butyeko breathing method has greatly improved my life and it can help you as well.

Vitamin D Deficiency Symptoms – Hair Loss, Mental Health, Seizures

Vitamin D is often known as the sunshine vitamin because our bodies can produce vitamin D through sun exposure. However, as people spend more time indoors and eat a diet rich in refined carbohydrates, more and more people are suffering from diseases related to Vitamin D deficiency.

Epilepsy

As someone who has epilepsy, I had a personal interest in learning more about how vitamin D levels effect the seizure threshold. As it turns out, seizures can be triggered by a low vitamin D level. Unfortunately, this is a downward spiral. Having a seizure uses up even more vitamin D. Therefore, your seizure threshold is reduced after having one. The current treatment is through anti-epileptic medications. Anti-convulsants interfere with the body’s production and usage of vitamin D. Once you are on anti-convulsants, it is very difficult to restore your vitamin D levels to normal.

According to the Epilepsy Foundation, supplementation with vitamin D can help to improve seizure control. Through a study published in 2012, 10 in 13 patients improved their seizure control with vitamin D supplementation. Therefore, if you suffer from seizures, it is a good idea to look into increasing your vitamin D levels.

Alopecia Areata and Alopecia Universalis

For people who experience alopecia areata and alopecia universalis, there is often a vitamin D deficiency. In a study conducted by the Indian Dermatology Journal online, it found that severe alopecia areata patients showed significantly lower levels of vitamin D compared to those with mild alopecia. Alopecia Areata patients have lower levels of 25-hydroxy vitamin D than healthy subjects.

Type 1 Diabetes

Researchers have found children with type 1 diabetes are more likely to suffer from a vitamin D deficiency compared to the general population. The recommendation for daily vitamin D supplementation in Finland was reduced from 4,000-5,000 IU/day in 1964 to 400 IU/day in 1992. During this time frame, the type 1 Diabetes patients increased by 350% in children 1-4 years of age. It increased 100% in individuals 5-9 years of age and 50% in those 10-14 years of age. Authorities required that the milk be fortified with vitamin D2 in 2006. At this time the incidence of type 1 Diabetes plateaued and began to decrease. This suggests that there is a link between Diabetes and vitamin D deficiency.

Dementia and Vitamin D Deficiency

A study published in August 2014 in the journal Neurology discovered that a severe vitamin D deficiency in older individuals is associated with some forms of dementia, including Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia. It involves a decline in thinking, behavior and memory.

The study analyzed more than 1,600 people age 65 or older that didn’t have any symptoms at the beginning of the study. Compared with people with normal vitamin D levels, those with lower levels of the vitamin had a 53% increased risk of developing dementia. Individuals who were severely deficient in vitamin D had a 125% increased risk of developing dementia. The researchers found that people with lower levels of vitamin D were 70% more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease.

Researchers noted that the study was observational. This means that there isn’t a direct cause and effect relationship with vitamin D. However, vitamin D may help to clear plaques in the brain that are linked to dementia.

Prostate Cancer and Low Vitamin D

A study published in May 2014 in the journal Clinical Cancer Research discovered a link between low vitamin D levels in the blood and aggressive prostate cancer.

The researchers observed the levels of 667 men between the ages of 40-79 undergoing biopsies. They noticed a strong connection between vitamin D and prostate cancer in African-American men.

It is important to note that the findings were observational. However, to help reduce your risk potential of prostate cancer, you may want to ensure that you get adequate amounts of vitamin D.

Vitamin D and Risk of Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a severe brain disorder which affects 1.1% of American adults. The symptoms of schizophrenia include hallucinations, incoherent speech, withdrawal from others and difficulty focusing or paying attention. The symptoms often appear between the ages of 16 and 30.

Individuals who have low vitamin D levels may be twice as likely to be diagnosed with schizophrenia. Researchers in a review published in October 2014 in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism reviewed findings from 19 observational studies that analyzed the relationship between schizophrenia and vitamin D deficiency. They found a link between the vitamin D deficiency and schizophrenia.

More clinical trials are needed to determine whether vitamin D treatment can prevent schizophrenia. However, it is a great idea to ensure that you are meeting your daily vitamin D requirements on your own.

Vitamin D Deficiency and Heart Disease

Many studies have indicated a connection between low vitamin D blood levels and heart disease complications. A review published in January 2014 in Circulation Research cites research that suggests vitamin D levels are a potential culprit for health problems that are related to heart disease including atherosclerosis, hypertension, diabetes and stroke. However, science hasn’t established if supplementation will reduce the risks.

Sticking with a diet that is high in vitamin D and exercising can help you raise your vitamin D levels. This may reduce your risk of heart disease.

How Much Vitamin D Do You Need?

The recommended daily allowance of vitamin D is 600 international units daily. This is according to the National Institute of Health. A few minutes outdoors in the sunshine with your skin exposed can help to meet some of those needs.

There are many foods that are rich in vitamin D. Fortified dairy, egg yolk, beef liver and fatty fish, like salmon and canned tuna are a great source of vitamin D.

Vitamin D supplements may be an option for you if you can’t get regular sun exposure and don’t have access to vitamin D rich food sources. Work with a registered dietitian or your primary care provider to discover whether a high dose of vitamin D or a low dose will address your health concerns.

The Paleo Diet Versus Paleo Ketogenic Diet

Many people try a diet and it just doesn’t produce results. Paleomedicina is a medical clinic in Hungary that is focusing on treating individuals with a Paleo Ketogenic diet. They tried out the paleo diet and noticed that some people did not have results with the Paleo diet. They tried out the ketogenic diet and discovered that there were people who didn’t improve on the ketogenic diet. As they combined the great aspects of both of those diets, they have been able to do some amazing things, such as reversing type 1 diabetes in newly diagnosed individuals.

The Paleo Diet

The Paleo diet teaches individuals to eat foods in their most natural state. They reject grains and breads. The Paleo diet does include vegetables and fruits. Some vegetables and fruits can be difficult for people autoimmune conditions. For example, potatoes are far too high in carbohydrates for diabetics. Tomatoes are nightshades, which can be inflammatory for individuals with autoimmune conditions.

Some of the vegetables that the Paleo diet includes could be perpetuating the autoimmune condition that many patients are trying desperately to heal.

The Ketogenic Diet

The ketogenic diet was created in the early 1900s to address epilepsy. It is extremely restrictive when it comes to carbohydrates. The ketogenic diet reduces the carbohydrate level to 20 grams per day. It requires that the dieters eat 75% fat. This forces the body to start running on fats as an energy source.

As someone who has suffered from epilepsy, I tried the ketogenic diet a few times. While I felt great on it, it didn’t always prevent seizures. It took me a few months of researching what I could have done wrong before I realized that I was probably sensitive to dairy. I felt fine when I consumed it, but I learned that for some people dairy will trigger seizures. This made me think that I may be sensitive without even realizing it.

Another food that is allowed on the ketogenic diet that may be problematic for some is vegetable oil. It is not forbidden on the ketogenic diet, but it can be inflammatory, especially soybean oil. I loved adding mayonnaise to my tuna fish, but it did have soybean oil in it. Soy is a food that is often a problem for people with autoimmune conditions. Since I hadn’t eliminated it completely, this may be the reason I wasn’t seeing an improvement in my autoimmune condition.

As I listened to Zsofia Clemens this morning, I realized that maybe I wasn’t seeing results from these diets that I had tried over the years because I left something detrimental in them. In the video below, she reviews the progress of her patients doing a Paleo Ketogenic Diet. This is very interesting because they review a dietary intervention and the effects.

The Paleo Ketogenic diet removes all plant food for a period of time. They also eliminate plant oils and encourage the patients to consume animal fats. Vegetable oils can be very inflammatory, so keeping them in the diet could be holding your progress back.

The Paleo Ketogenic Diet allows for the healing of the gut by removing the major irritants and focusing solely on the most nutrient dense foods – meats. This diet is powerful in eliminating intestinal permeability, which is the main cause of autoimmune disorders. It is amazing to see that so many people are healing while on a meat based diet.

Infrared FAR IR Negative Ion Portable Personal Sauna, Product Overview

This is a portable far infrared personal sauna. It includes a negation ion infrared heating elements, portable chair, timer and heating foot pad. The dimensions are 27.5″W x 30″D x 38″ H. This infrared sauna only takes five minutes to heat up. The timer can be set for thirty minutes maximum.

This is a very affordable sauna, which can be used in your apartment or home. It folds up and takes up only a few inches of space in your closet. This sauna comes with a negative ION generator.

Most particles in the air contain a positive charge. Negative ions have a negative charge. Therefore, negative ions and particles will attract each other. In a high enough concentration of negative ions, they attract floating particles in large amounts. This causes the particle to be too heavy to stay in the air.

This far infrared portable sauna is much more convenient than a large sauna. It has three heaters that are high tech, super conductive and have an ultra-thin carbon fiber heating element. It is designed to allow your head and hands to remain out of the sauna for reading or watching TV.

Always consult your physician before using this sauna. If you have open wounds, consult your doctor before use.

The Good & the Bad

The Good:

  1. It is economical. If you currently are using a gym membership for sauna usage, this can easily replace it. It is only $169 and will last a long time.
  2. It is portable. You can take this with you when you move. The sauna can be folded up when not in use. Therefore, it is ideal for people who are living in apartments.
  3. It heats up quickly. You will notice that you are sweating within 5 minutes of turning it on and getting inside.

The Bad:

  1. There are concerns about the EMFs being emitted from this unit.
  2. It helps detox. Consumers who have Lyme disease have reported relief and detoxification using this far infrared portable sauna.

Who is Infrared FAR IR Negative Ion Portable Indoor Personal Spa or Sauna by Ridgeyard For?

This is for the person who is interested in detoxing through sweating. It is for the individual who wants to use a sauna on a daily basis.

It is excellent for helping to get circulation flowing throughout the body. The heat can soothe sore muscles. Saunas are excellent for relaxation.

Portable Infrared Sauna Price

This is a very affordable option for a portable sauna. There are some less expensive steam saunas that are similar in nature, but don’t offer the benefits of infrared technology. At $159, the portable infrared sauna is within budget for many individuals.

Another benefit of the portable sauna is that you can take it with you when you move, unlike a built in sauna. Most importantly, you won’t lose your investment on the sauna when you change locations.

My Final Opinion of Portable Infrared Sauna

I bought this sauna as a way to detox my body. I was convinced that it would heal some health conditions. While it did help me sweat a lot and provided loads of relaxation, I don’t know if I was sweating out toxins. It didn’t magically heal my alopecia. After a while, I got tired of using it and eventually gave it away. However, I will say that it worked well when I did have it.

I loved that the portable infrared sauna was easy to fold up and put away when I was done using it. It folded flat and easily fit into my closet. I also liked that I could easily move it from one place to another.

I used this frequently and it was very easy set up and take down. I highly recommend this for anyone who wants to try at-home sauna therapy.

Foods That Trigger Seizures

If you have epilepsy, you may want to be aware of the foods that trigger seizures. Often doctors are not well versed in nutrition and focus intently on the pharmaceutical interventions that will prevent seizures. However, there are many foods that can trigger seizures. Unfortunately, it is difficult to identify them in your diet when you have a very wide variety of foods that you eat and the seizures may take up to 48 hours after you eat the food to appear.

Gluten

Gluten is a wheat protein. The problem with the way that wheat is processed is that it is sprayed with glyphosate, a neurotoxin prior to harvesting it. Therefore, you are essentially eating a small dose of weed killer each time you take a bite of bread. This is not good for anyone, but especially someone who has a seizure disorder.

Another reason to avoid wheat and wheat containing products is due to the fact that they are high on the glycemic index. Research published in the “Neurology” journal in 2006 indicates that one half of a patient group treated with a diet regimen that had only low-glycemic foods showed 90 percent fewer seizures. Fluctuating blood glucose levels can trigger seizures. All wheat containing foods are high on the glycemic index.

It is best to take all grains out of your diet and focus on meat and vegetables if you have a seizure disorder.

High Glycemic Index Fruits and Vegetables

The Epilepsy Society recommends that you avoid certain vegetables and fruits which fall in the medium to high-glycemic index range. These include bananas, mashed potatoes, mangoes, raisins and dates. You may want to avoid all starchy vegetables including sweet potatoes. Avoiding these fruits and vegetables will help to control your blood sugars, which will improve your brain function. When your blood sugar drastically increases, the neurons can become more excitable and put you at further risk for more seizures.

It is a great idea to follow a ketogenic diet. For more information about following a ketogenic diet check out the free digital cookbook, Bacon and Butter.

Monosodium Glutamate

A food additive monosodium glutamate, MSG, is often used as flavoring in a variety of foods. It is most commonly used in Chinese food. Many individuals are sensitive to MSG. In an animal study published in “Neuroscience Letters” it determined that excess MSG can physically alter the nerves of rats and lead to epileptic seizures. Even if it hasn’t been determined that you are sensitive to MSG, if you suffer from epileptic seizures, these can become worse if you take any amount of MSG. Therefore, it is best to avoid it if possible.

Ginkgo Nuts

A study published in “Epilepsia” in 2001 reported that consuming a great amount of ginkgo nuts can cause vomiting and seizures for hours after their consumption. Ginkgo nuts are commonly eaten in China and Japan. The study discovered that these nuts can trigger seizures even in individuals who do not have a history of epilepsy or any kind of seizures. For individuals with epilepsy, it is best to avoid these types of nuts because they may be toxic to your nervous system.

Dairy

Dairy is a common trigger for people who have epilepsy. The casein protein is molecularly similar to the gluten protein and can trigger a reaction within the body. Casein triggers an inflammatory response in the body, which can impact the brain. In the clip below, Dr. David Clark, DC, shares an experience treating a child whose seizures were triggered by cheese.

Epsom Salt Bath Benefits for Weight Loss

Did you know that there are Epsom Salt Bath Benefits for weight loss? If you are stuck in a weight loss rut, you may want to take a break from the treadmill and staring at the pantry and relax in an Epsom salt bath. Epsom salt baths have many benefits and these benefits can impact whether your body releases its weight or not.

Stress often increases you desire to eat unhealthy foods. We live in a very stressful world and sometimes your body simply needs to relax. Stress drains the body of its magnesium levels and can cause an increase in your adrenaline. Epsom salt is absorbed through the skin and replenishes the body with magnesium, which helps to produce mood elevating chemicals within the brain to create a relaxed and calm feeling.

Epsom salt has been used since the 1900s for weight loss and to cure digestive and skin problems. The clear crystals can help to regulate many enzymes in our bodies and maintain healthy hair, nails and skin though assisting in collagen synthesis.

Epsom Salt Bath For Losing Weight

1. How Does Epsom Salt Help You Lose Weight?

Our metabolism is what helps us to maintain a healthy weight, adjust to the environment and do the daily repair work that is required for optimal health. The cells of our body require magnesium to complete these tasks.

The second component of Epsom salt is sulfate. Stephanie Seneff, an MIT researcher states, “Sulfur is known as a healing mineral, a sulfur deficiency will often lead to pain and inflammation associated with various muscle and skeletal disorders.” Due to modern lifestyle habits and farming practices, many people are becoming deficient in both magnesium and sulfate, which according to Stephanie Seneff, is leading to heart disease and obesity.

Rosemary Waring, a British biochemist from the University of Birmingham, discovered that sulfate and magnesium are absorbed into the skin during an Epsom salt bath. The levels of these two minerals in the blood increase after you soak in the bath for about 20 minutes and they start the work of eliminating environmental toxins from the body. Epsom salts also heal other ailments of the skin. Therefore, it makes you feel relaxed and less stressed.

A deficiency of magnesium in the body can lead to high blood pressure, heart problems, backaches and headaches. Low levels of sulfate in the body result in exhaustion. If the levels of magnesium and sulfate increase in the blood, the system of the body reaches a balance. It will start to function properly.

Often poor absorption of nutrients and emotional eating are considered the culprits of weight gain. However, when toxins are expelled from the body, you feel more energetic and relaxed. You are less likely to turn to food and binge on food. This will reduce your instances of overeating and your metabolism will start to work at its best. This can lead to weight reduction.

2. How To Make Epsom Salt Bath For Weight Loss

Epsom salt baths can be made by adding about 1-2 cups of Epsom salt to warm bath water. Do not add more salt to the water, as more salt does not equal more weight loss. The Epsom Salt bath works best when you use 1-2 cups of Epsom Salt.

Mountain Falls is one of the least expensive Epsom salt brands. Compared to another Lavender scented Epsom salt brand, Dr. Teal’s, the Mountain Falls brand is about half the price. Currently, Dr. Teal’s charges $16.29 for two 3 lb bags. (The one pound bag is not an option on Amazon.)

Mountain Falls allows you to buy a smaller amount and pay less per pound.

My Final Opinion of Mountain Falls Epsom Salt

I really like the price of Mountain Falls Epsom Salt. To me, it is not important to have the most expensive brand of Epsom Salt. While some people did point out that the Dr. Teal brand dissolves faster compared to Mountain Falls, I am a patient person and can spend a little more time waiting for it to dissolve. Also, it may be helpful to use hotter water if you find that the Epsom salts aren’t dissolving very quickly.

The lavender isn’t scented very strongly, but it is nice. I don’t tend to use a lot of strong fragrances in my home, so it suits me just fine. Many people reported that the scent seemed stronger when the bag was just opened, but felt just about right when soaking in the tub. While there were a few people who complained that the scent wasn’t strong enough, many of the reviewers on Amazon reported loving the smell.

The majority of the reviews on Amazon for these Epsom Salts were positive. 66% gave it five stars.

Stop Night Time Leg Cramps – Natural Cures for Leg Cramps

I woke up this morning with my ankle in an extended position and aching. I had a nighttime leg cramp. It didn’t hurt too much and I know that sometimes leg cramps occur when you are magnesium deficient, but I decided to do a bit of research today and see if I could learn more about natural cures for leg cramps, so I could stop nighttime leg cramps once and for all!

Let’s dive in and learn more about nighttime (or nocturnal) leg cramps!

What are nocturnal leg cramps?

Nocturnal leg cramps are the pains that you feel in your legs during the night. They can often wake you up from sleep, but they may also occur while awake at night during periods of inactivity. Night time leg cramps mostly happen in the calf muscles, but they can also occur in the thighs or feet. They can be quite painful and cause the muscles to feel tight or knotted. The cramps may last from several seconds to several minutes. There also may be muscle soreness after the cramp goes away.

Who Gets Nocturnal Leg Cramps?

Nocturnal leg cramps are common in adults over age 50, but they may also occur in younger adults and children. Men and women are equally affected by them. There might also be muscle soreness after the cramp goes away. Nocturnal leg cramps are more common in adults over age 50, but they also do occur in younger adults and children. Both men and women seem to be equally affected.

Causes of Leg Cramps at Night

The specific cause of nocturnal leg cramps is unknown. It can be different for many people. It is associated with the following conditions:

  • Sitting for long periods of time
  • Over-exertion of the muscles
  • Standing or working on concrete floors
  • Sitting improperly

Some medical conditions are associated with leg cramps. These include the following:

  • Pregnancy
  • Dehydration
  • Magnesium Deficiencies
  • electrolyte imbalances
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Neuromuscular disorders (neuropathy, myopathy, motor neuron disease)
  • Structural disorders (flat feet)
  • Endocrine disorders (diabetes, hypothyroidism)
  • Diuretics, statins, beta agonists

How to Get Relief From Night Time Leg Cramps

In the majority of cases, nighttime leg cramps are harmless. They can be relieved and even prevented with simple stretching and other self-care measures and remedies. However, if you are experiencing nocturnal leg cramps regularly and they cause significant discomfort, please see your doctor, especially if the leg cramps are interfering with your sleep patterns or you are having muscle weakness, swelling, numbness or pain that lingers and continues to return.

While more people who are middle age and older get leg cramps, it is difficult to pinpoint the exact cause. Many times these cramps occur for no known reason. Therefore, it can be difficult to get rid of them.

There are three main things that you may want to try to eliminate a nocturnal leg cramp:

  1. Stretch it out
  2. Massage
  3. Increase magnesium

If it is your calf muscle that cramps up in the middle of the night, stand up and put weight on the affected leg in order to push the heel to the floor. This will stretch out the muscle.

Another stretch that is helpful is to put your weight on the affected leg and bend your knee slightly. This decreases the tension in the calf as that muscle stretches out and the opposing muscles contract.

If you are sitting or lying down with your leg straight out, pull the top of your foot towards your head.

For cramps in the quadriceps (thighs), you can hold onto a chair to steady yourself and pull your foot back towards your buttock. This will stretch out the quadriceps.

Other Remedies to Try

Massaging the muscle may give you relief. Increasing the blood flow to the area through heat or ice can improve your symptoms of cramps as well. You may also want to try taking an Epsom salt bath. Epsom salt is high in magnesium and can help to correct a deficiency when you soak in it.

Can I Prevent Them?

Preventing leg cramps before they start is one of the best things that you can do. Prevention starts with eating more foods that are high in vitamins, magnesium and calcium. Staying well-hydrated will help to prevent nocturnal leg cramps. Additionally, you’ll want to create a daily stretching routine for yourself and ensure that you are exercising daily.

Green Pasture Blue Ice Royal Butter Oil / Fermented Cod Liver Oil, Product Overview

Cod liver oil has historically been used to improve health. Cultures that have gained the most benefit from cod liver oil took the time necessary to hand craft and ferment them. The largest benefit of fermentation is that it keeps the delicate nutrients intact and can actually increase them. This product contains 1/3 X Factor Gold high vitamin butter and 2/3 blue ice fermented cod liver oil.

The Green Pastures brand fermented cod liver oil is made in small batches with extraordinary care. The livers are fermented from fish that have been exclusively wild caught in the Bering Sea/Aleutian Islands region. The Marine Stewardship Council ensures that the cod livers we source have been sustainably wild-caught.

This cod liver oils is fermented. Fermentation is a natural enzymatic and microbial action which releases oil from the livers. Green Pastures Fermented Cod Liver Oil is a raw, whole food. There are no additives of any kind.

The combination of high vitamin and butter oil are recommended by Weston A. Price as a way to cure cavities. Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride recommends followers of her GAPS diet to use fermented cod liver oil in their diets to heal and seal the gut. This is due to its high nutrient density.

The Butter Oil/Fermented Cod liver oil contains:

  • Natural Source of Omega 3, 6, 6 & 9 Fatty Acids
  • Important fat soluble nutrients
  • High in vitamins D and A

In this bottle there are 96- 1/2 tsp servings per container. It will last you from 1-3 months depending on how many servings per day that you consume.

The Good & the Bad

The Good:

  1. This is high in the essential fat soluble vitamins that may be missing from a modern industrial diet.
  2. The Butter/Cod liver oil is a great source of omega 3, 6, and 9.
  3. It has been reported by many people that their teeth started to remineralize when they added fermented cod liver oil to their diet and removed processed foods and grains from their diets.
  4. While most cod liver oils taste terrible, this has a pleasant cinnamon flavor that is actually great.
  5. Some users have reported an improvement in their acne.
  6. Higher amount of vitamin D than conventional cod liver oil.

The Bad:

  1. It does cost more than conventional cod liver oil.
  2. It is not available in grocery stores. You may be able to find it in health stores. It is available online.

Who is Green Pastures Fermented Butter Oil/Cod Liver Oil for?

This is a cod liver oil supplement that is for the person serious about curing their cavities and eliminating health problems naturally. It is very nutrient dense, but it does cost quite a bit more than the conventional cod liver oil on the market. (I do have a review of a cod liver oil that is more affordable, but has fewer vitamins and minerals).

It can also be used to address autoimmune conditions in conjunction with the Gut and Psychology Syndrome Diet by Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride. Many people with autoimmune conditions often are deficient in fat soluble vitamins, such as vitamin D and K, which are abundant in this fermented butter oil/cod liver oil.

Green Pastures Fermented Butter Oil/Cod Liver Oil Price

The cost of Green Pastures brand fermented butter oil/cod liver oil can deter many individuals. It is $50 per bottle! That is quite a bit for a supplement. However, it will help you to correct nutritional deficiencies that are likely causing a need for much more expensive medications. If you break the price down into how much you’re spending on your health per day, it is $.55 per day. That is calculated by taking 1/2 teaspoon per day.

My Final Opinion of Green Pastures Fermented Butter Oil/Cod Liver Oil Cinnamon Tingle Gel

In terms of cod liver oil, this tastes great! It is easy to supplement with the cinnamon gel that has a spicy aftertaste instead of a strong fishy taste. I like that it comes in a gel form. For me, it is easier to take than a spoonful of oil. It just feels better.

I tend to purchase this Blue Ice Royal Butter Oil/Fermented Cod Liver Oil gel occasionally due to the cost. I will alternate my supplementation of cod liver oil between this brand and a less expensive brand. It is high quality, but sometimes I don’t feel like spending $50 for a supplement each month. I am encouraged to purchase it by all the positive reviews of tooth mineralization that I have read online.

I will mention that I purchase it from Amazon as opposed to their website. The cost is the same, but with Amazon Prime, shipping only takes two days.
