The deluxe kit includes everything you need to start a workout program. You will receive the three phases of workouts for a total of 15 workouts. There are fifteen total 25 minute workouts that you are to do on a daily basis. This is broken into three sets, the alpha, beta and gamma.

The beta set of workouts was created to take your body to a whole new level by focusing on the core. Finally, the Gamma set of workouts is four weeks of advanced exercises to help you burn more fat and carve lean, strong muscles in record time.

The Good & the Bad

The Good: Moderate intensity workouts

PRO #1: Shaun T has you focus intently on your workout for 25 minutes and make the most of the time that you are investing in your health. I found Shaun T very enjoyable to follow. He tends to use upbeat music and positive statements in his videos.

PRO #2: Unlike the Insanity workouts, these workouts have modifications for people who are not as fit. These can be done by the beginner and intermediate.

PRO #3: There is a nice progression and increase in intensity to help you continue building muscle.

The Bad: Somewhat repetitive exercises

CON #1: The exercises, while challenging, were repetitive.

CON #2: Heavy focus on jumping jacks and squats for the cardio. It could have been more varied. He emphasized a lot of leg movements, but could have included more arm motions to increase the heart rate.

Who is Shaun T’s Focus T25 For?

The Focus T25 workout by Beachbody is great for the individual who can only commit to twenty-five minutes a day to workout. It is ideal for the stay at home mom or dad to squeeze in a workout during a child’s nap or early in the morning.

The Deluxe Set offered on Amazon is great, but it does require that you have a computer or DVD player to play the DVD. For the professional on the go, you can also access Shaun T’s Focus T25 through Beachbody’s On Demand service. This is great for people who are traveling or who don’t always have their DVD player handy as it can be streamed online on an iPhone, iPad or laptop.

The training material that accompanies Shaun T’s workout is a nutritional guide, a workout calendar to keep you on track.

The Deluxe version comes with a mat. It is pretty standard exercise mat. However, it is not a full-length mat. It is only a little over 3 feet long. You use the mat in order to pad your hands when doing push-ups. However, many people may desire a mat that is their whole body length if they are used to working out with a yoga mat.

You receive three sets of bands and one set of handles that you can take off one band and put on a different band if you want to use a different resistance level. This offers you the flexibility of increasing the resistance as you progress through the workouts.

The whole package comes to you at $145.60. Because you are getting a whole set of DVDs, 15 workouts in all, equipment and a nutrition guide, this product is reasonably priced. However, many people suggest buying it separately and using mats and equipment that you purchase. This gives you the flexibility of selecting the right mat length for you as well as resistance bands that you feel are appropriate.

My Final Opinion of Shaun T’s Focus T25

The workout is a bit on the high impact side. I did appreciate that there were modifications for people who didn’t want to jump up and down a lot. The workout was challenging, but I was able to stick with it. I did enjoy the background music and the energy that Shaun T brought to the table.

I love the concept of only doing 25 minutes at a time. It seems very practical for the average American. Many people hear an hour and they feel like they just can’t find time for it, but 25 minutes can be squeezed in during a lunch break or while your kids are napping.

I actually really enjoyed doing this workout. It challenged me. I often fell into the same workout patterns of jogging, which can over work some muscles. Shaun T’s workout focused on alternating the different leg muscles that you were working by switching from different types of lunges and mixing it up with jumping jacks. Overall, I really liked the workout.

My Final Opinion of 6 Week Fit

I think it is a good workout program for people who want exercises to do at home. The exercises will build your muscles and the progressive nature of the program will challenge you. However, it is a PDF that you print out. You don’t watch the fitness instructor and mimic it. Therefore, it is ideal for someone who takes a lot of initiative in their lives.

The great thing about it only being a PDF, is that you don’t have to have your computer around all the time to watch the exercises and do them. You can print them out, check the workout schedule and do the exercises. Since they can be done from home, you don’t even need to worry about going to the gym to do the exercises.

The instructor focuses on helping you heal both physically and emotionally. This is great for the person who needs healing, but not ideal for someone who is pretty fit and healthy already. The focus on healing in Tera’s DVDs will encourage your own focus on healing and often that will trigger a healing response from your body.

My Final Opinion of Yoga For Healing

I think this is a great set of DVDs that help people who are recovering from an illness or setback. I love that Tera has you use items that you currently already have at home instead of telling you to buy additional equipment. I think it is great that she has adjusted vinyasa yoga to help people who are healing.

It is a great way to heal from the comfort of your own home. I love that you can do yoga without leaving your home and get not only healing done, but also improve your flexibility and increase your strength.

I did rate Yoga For Healing a bit lower because I think it is priced a little bit high. However, other yoga DVDs don’t necessarily address a healing aspect. They simply have modifications to the poses for beginners, etc. Tera has created her yoga with healing in mind.

How to Start a Yoga Practice At Home

Many people are interested in incorporating in yoga into their exercise program. This is a great idea. Yoga can be done from the comfort of your home. You can gain the benefits of yoga if you learn the poses well. Yoga incorporates mindfulness, flexibility, strength and breathing control. Yoga can help you clear your mind and improve your strength at the same time.

Motivate Yourself to Exercise

These are some of my favorite yoga poses that can be done almost anywhere and are a great place to start learning yoga!

Downward Dog – STRENGTHENS The arms and Shoulders. Stretches the hamstrings.  

  • Sun Salutation – Stretches all the major muscle groups of the body. It also opens up the chest. The Sun Salutation is a series of poses that many use to start the day.

Set Aside a Time For Your Yoga Practice

If you don’t schedule it in, it won’t get done. For me, the best time to make sure I get exercise in is the first thing in the morning. Later in the day, I tend to start procrastinating or re-prioritizing things. Some people are able to set aside an hour at the end of the day. Due to the fact that exercising tends to make me more alert and wake me up, I don’t practice in the evenings. However, you will figure out what works best for you.

Ideally, you want to schedule in at least half an hour of yoga to get the health benefits of yoga. Anything less than half an hour isn’t going to have much impact on your health.

Luckily, there isn’t much that you need to practice yoga! Here are some of the basics:

Now that you know the basics, you can get started doing yoga at home! Eliminate your excuses and get your yoga on! Remember, you won’t see the benefits of exercise unless you start doing it consistently. So, make your yoga practice a habit.

Focus you mind on the benefits that you will see from your daily yoga practice when you start to feel resistance to exercise. Think about how great you will feel when you have finished your yoga workout. This will improve your resolve to continue and get it done.

 

 

 

Does Exercise Boost Energy?

Does exercise boost your energy levels? You bet it does! Getting moving does so much for your health. It helps with digestion, improves sleep, and increases energy levels. Exercise is one of those free things that we can do to improve our health on our own time. There is no need to go to a doctor or spend a ton of money on an expensive therapy. Exercise and improve your focus, concentration, memory and mood. It truly is amazing.

Unfortunately, not everyone is reaping the benefits of exercise that I am getting because they are missing out on a few key elements. When you exercise and don’t feel more energized and craving more exercise and activity, you are probably doing it wrong.

Get Hydrated Before You Exercise

Exercise that is tough enough to trigger perspiration will dehydrate you. It is essential to be hydrated when you exercise so that you don’t put your health at risk. Slight dehydration can cause lethargy and headaches. It can intensify the symptoms of asthma and autoimmune conditions.

Hydrating your cells as you work out and throughout the day ensures that they have the water that they need to help detoxify your body through sweating. Water assists your body in the detoxification process. It helps with digestion. Every organ of your body needs water, so before you start stressing your body with exercise, make sure you are giving it enough water!

There are some basic guidelines for hydration. You should be taking in half an ounce of water for every pound of body fat that you have. This will ensure that you are consuming enough water to suport your body’s functions. In addition to the water, you will want to make sure that you ar ereplensihing the electrolytes that your body needs as well. You should also take 1/8 of a teaspoon of salt for every 16 ounces of water that you drink. Take the salt and let it dissolve on your tongue and then drink the water. Break up your water consumption into 5 doses per day. 

Nasal Breathe ONLY

This is one that many people get wrong. In fact, during elementary school, I remember my gym teacher telling me to breathe in through my nose and out through my mouth. I was out of shape and had asthma. In the end, I was gasping air in and out of my mouth. There is a huge disadvantage to breathing in and out of your mouth. It throws off the time that the body needs for gaseous exchange. It bypasses the cilia in the nasal cavity that filters and warms the incoming air. This leaves you at greater risk for catching the latest flu or virus that is going around.

I learned the Buteyko breathing method as a way to eliminate my seizures and achieve optimal health. It sounded too simple, but I have been able to eliminate my seizure medication and be seizure free with this simple form of breathing. If you are like me, you have probably been breathing through your nose and mouth your entire life. Focus on trying to breathe through your nose 24/7, including during exercise. At first, it may feel a bit uncomfortable, but you’ll start to notice that the benefits of exercise are greater when you breathe through your nose while you exercise. You’ll notice that you get fewer colds, have more energy and sleep better at night.

Increase the Amount of Exercise

The Department of Health and Human Services recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity a week. Yikes! That is no where near enough! If you have a busy lifestyle and are only getting an hour or two of exercise in a week, you aren’t going to feel much benefit from the exercise. The Buteyko method recommends that you get at least 1-2 hours of vigorous exercise per day and if you are interested in states of super health, then you should be doing even more!

This year, I have made a goal to achieve a state of super health. I have increased my workout time to two and a half hours per day. (Many of you may be wondering where I get all that extra time. I have a treadmill desk and do two things at once. I also have a dog that needs walks and I tend to squeeze in some squats while cooking. I definitely slip in more movement throughout my day than most people.)
