How Long Does it Take to Become Keto Adapted?

When people start the ketogenic diet, they tend to be a bit impatient about seeing results. Many of them question how long it takes to become keto-adapted. The frustrating answer is that it varies from person to person. However, the average time frame to become keto adapted is going to be 4-5 weeks.

Ketosis vs. Keto-Adapted

First and foremost, you should understand that there is a difference between simply being in ketosis and being keto-adapted.

First, let’s discuss the definition of ketosis. Ketosis is the state your body enters where it is producing its own ketones. There are three main ketone bodies that your body produces – acetoaccetate, acetone, and beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB). Ketones are produce by the liver as a result of breaking down fatty acids.

There is a tiny problem with this simplified definition of ketosis. The liver is constantly breaking down fatty acids and creating ketones. However, we don’t consider people to constantly be in ketosis until the level of ketones produced is high enough. So how high do your ketone levels have to be considered “in ketosis”? Dr. Stephen Phinney, who is the one who actually coined the term “nutritional ketosis.” He provided a lower and upper limit to the definition of nutritional ketosis. By Phinney’s definition, nutritional ketosis is the state of ketone production that lies between 0.5 mmol/dl and 5 mmol/dl.

Once your body is producing ketones at a level between 0.5 mmol/dl and 5 mmol/dl, then you are in ketosis. You can be in ketosis easily when you wake up in the morning because you have been intermittent fasting for 12 hours, but you won’t necessarily be keto adapted.

Keto-adapted refers to a state where the body is using fat as its primary fuel source. Your body has to go through a few changes in order to become keto-adapted. First and foremost, you have to eliminate glucose and glycogen as an optimal fuel source. Then you have to produce ketones within the “nutritional ketosis” range. Finally, you have to produce ketones within the “nutritional ketosis” range long enough that your body switches to using fat as its preferred fuel source. Once that happens, you are keto-adapted.

Keto-adaptation can take a while because there is an interesting interplay between the energy needs of your brain and the skeletal muscles. When ketone levels are lowered, the muscles will use ketones for fuel. As the ketone levels increase, the muscles will burn fat for fuel instead. The brain uses ketones in proportion to the amount present in the blood. When you have more ketones in your blood, there will be more ketones for the brain to use and fewer ketones for the muscles to use. (The muscles start to use fat directly instead of ketones when this happens.

At a certain point, your muscles will be using your stored fat for fuel and your brain will be functioning on ketones for fuel. This is when you are keto-adapted.

So, when you get out those ketone strips to measure the ketones in your urine, realize that this is the first step to becoming keto-adapted. Keeping those ketone levels in the nutritional ketosis range for about 4-5 weeks will ensure that your body becomes keto-adapted.

What Can I Do to Help My Body Adapt?

One of the most important things when going through the adaptation phase is to ensure that you are getting enough salt according to Dr. Phinney. Your body is adjusting to a different fuel source and may be flushing out toxins and in the process eliminate some of the essential minerals in your body. Your body will adjust to being fat adapted in stages.

The First Three Days: Carbohydrate Withdrawal

Some people consider the first few days to be carbohydrate withdrawal. There are some common characteristics between addictions and excessive carbohydrate intake. For example, you may feel carb cravings simply because the diet you are used to has so many carbohydrates and your body is adjusting.

You may also feel a period of discomfort when you first cut back from carbohydrates. This is mostly psychological. You are missing your favorite high-carb foods. Many people find that they think about the foods more once they are gone.

To get over this hurdle, there are some things that you can do:

  1. Consume Fiber with Fats. When you combine fat with fiber, it produces a feeling of satiety. You will feel full. If you’ve jumped on the keto bandwagon because you are overweight, burning more calories will help to burn off more fat. You will see faster results.

It’s good for the heart, builds muscle to keep you lean and toned, and strengths the bones. Thankfully, exercise can completely fit into your routine while eating for ketosis. You just need to keep in mind a few simple considerations:

Types of Exercise

There are four main types of workouts that you can do. They are typically classified as aerobic, anaerobic flexibility and stability.

Through carbohydrate restriction, we start to limit the ability of our muscles’ to access sugar, which is one of the fast fuel sources. Without enough sugar, the muscles’ ability to function at high intensities (any activities extending beyond 10 seconds) becomes impaired. After about 10 seconds of near maximal to all out effort, the muscles’ will begin to rely on glucose for energy through a pathway called glycolysis instead of the phosaphen system. The phosaphen system depends on creatine phosphate and ATP, not glucose. Any muscular activity that requires near maximal to all out effort for 10 seconds to 120 seconds is only able to be fueled with glucose.

Ketones and fat can not stand in for glucose in the glycolytic pathway. It will take about 2 minutes of exercise for your body to start to shift metabolic pathways that can burn the ketones and fat. Restricting carbohydrates means that the body does not have the sugar that it needs to fuel activities that require a high intensity effort for 10 seconds to 2 minutes. For these activities, the ketogenic diet can limit your performance. This would include lifting weights that are heavy enough to take you to failure, sprinting, sports such as soccer and rugby, etc.

You may notice that your performance levels for these sports may dip when you start the ketogenic diet. This is completely normal and expected.

 

 

Doing Cardio on Keto

Due to the nature of cardio exercises, the ketogenic diet will not impair your performance. The wonderful part of cardio is that you don’t have to exercise at high intensities that require you to burn sugar and glycogen to get results. You simply need to get your heart rate up and keep it up.

For cardio exercise, you should select the right intensity to get the most benefits. The CDC defines this as moderate intensity, or getting your target heart rate up to 50-70% of your maximum heart rate.

There is an equation to figure out your maximum heart rate. Subtract your age from 220. For example, if you are 50 years old, the estimated maximum age related heart rate would be calculated as such: 220-50=170 beats per minute. To calculate the range, you would multiply 170 X .50 = 85bpm and 170x .70 = 119 bpm. Therefore, the target range that you want for your heart rate will be 85-119 beats per minute (bpm).

During your adaptation phase of the ketogenic diet, you should aim for the lower end of the range, or the fifty percent level. After you have been on the ketogenic diet for a few weeks, you will be able to maintain a higher heart rate longer without needing to burn too many carbohydrates.

As you are adapting to the ketogenic diet, aim for the lower end of the range (50% level). After a couple of weeks on the diet, you will be able to maintain a higher heart rate for longer without needing to burn too many carbs. If you are new to exercising, you will want to build up your endurance. Start with 50% of your max heart rate for 10-15 minutes. Then you should increase the duration of exercise by about five minutes each week until you can comfortably complete 30-45 minutes with your average heart rate around 50% of your calculated max.

When you can comfortably complete 45 minutes with your intensity at 50% of your max heart rate, it will be time to start increasing your intensity. You will gradually work your way up to around 70% of your max heart rate.

My Final Opinion of Cure Tooth Decay

I absolutely loved reading this book. I discovered it after I had 2 root canals and 2 cracked teeth. I have four crowns on my back teeth! I learned that the anticonvulsants that I was taking and the standard American diet that I was eating was ruining my dental health. I had to take action, or I was quickly going to lose my teeth. I read this book when it first came out eight years ago. I loved it. To me, it was one of the most empowering books that I could have read.

Since I have implemented the recommendations in the book, I haven’t had tooth problems at all. It has been an amazing and wonderful change in my lifestyle. It was quite weird to go from my dentist’s prescription fluoride toothpaste to fluoride free toothpaste, but my teeth feel great. They feel strong and healthy.

I will admit that I haven’t always followed the dietary recommendations. When I do venture back into the standard American diet, I may feel a twinge of pain in my root canal tooth (somehow I thought they removed the nerve, but I still can feel it occasionally). However, if I go back on the dietary recommendations, that pain quickly vanishes and my teeth go back to feeling great.

There is a lot of freedom on her dietary recommendations.

The dietary guide does come with a shopping list of foods. The program recommends 3 meals and a snack daily. Jen also recommends a serving of fat per meal, consuming enough lean protein. She recommends a weekly cheat meal, which is something that is a bit controversial. It deviates a bit from my own personal dietary advice.

 

Bikini Body Workouts Supplement Guide

I found it very interesting that Jen included a supplement regimen. For this reason, I lowered my rating of her program. Supplements are not that effective for weight loss. If you are eating a well-balanced diet, you shouldn’t need supplements.

The Bikini Body Workouts recommends the following supplements:

  • fish oil
  • protein powder
  • multivitamins

The nice thing about her recommendations are that they are affordable.

Fish oil contains fatty acids. Her reasoning is that they can be helpful for controlling food cravings. One great thing about fish oil is that it does contain omega 3 fatty acids and vitamin D. It is a healthy source of fats.

The next supplement that is recommended in this program is not something that I endorse. Protein powder is recommended. This is because on a low calorie diet, it can be difficult to fit in enough protein to build muscle. I recommend eating meat. You should be able to get enough protein from meat.

Ferruggia recommends a multivitamin for overall health and energy levels. She offers recommendations for purchasing the right multivitamin and other supplements.

The issue that I have with supplements is that many of the nutrients that are listed are not really in a bio available form once you pick up the pill or powder. It is much more effective to get those nutrients from whole foods. However, good marketing will make you believe that you need a certain vitamin or mineral and many people buy them.

Despite the fat that this program includes advice that I disagree with on supplementation, the workouts are well constructed. They take into consideration safety and muscle recovery. The exercises are designed to workout the whole body, so for this reason, I find that this is still a great choice for people who are working towards the perfect bikini body.

Easy Caprese Salad Recipe – My Favorite Keto Snack!

Summer is here! That means farmers market juicy tomatoes, basil, summer squash and all the other wonderful produce that comes during the summer. Many summer fruits won’t fit into a ketogenic diet, but the tomato is considered a vegetable and it does fit nicely into the ketogenic diet. A few slices of tomatoes will only add up to a few carbohydrates. Nothing tastes more like summer than a farm fresh tomato!

A Caprese salad is the perfect summer keto snack. You’ll get loads of flavor from the tomato and the basil, while the olive oil and mozzarella supply you with plenty of fats to keep you fueled up and raring to go!

This is my easy Caprese salad. I know a lot of people may want to have a balsamic vinegar reduction, but I like to keep it simple.

Easy Caprese Salad Recipe

Ingredients:

Tomato – medium to large beefsteak

1 ball fresh mozzarella

2-3 leaves basil

2-3 tablespoons of olive oil

sea salt (to taste)

 

Directions:

Slice the tomato into thick slices about 1/4 inch thick.

Slice the mozzarella ball.

Place the mozzarella slices alternating with the tomato slices.

Drizzle olive oil on top.

Thinly slice basil and sprinkle on top of the mozzarella and the tomato slices.

Sprinkle sea salt to taste.

(Optional: sprinkle some balsamic vinegar on top. I don’t always have vinegar on hand and find that it is tasty even without it!)
